This is the story of a puppeteer, Lakshmana Pulavar, and his struggle to keep alive the epic Ramayana through his art form, Tholpavakuthu. As a 14th generation puppeteer, Lakshmana inherits the strenuous oral tradition of performing the Kambar Ramayana in temples over 21 nights for centuries. Now, in the 21st century, he struggles to find relevance for his ancient art. After decades playing and living the many characters in the epic, he finds himself molded into the image of it's central character - Lord Rama.
